Diamond Ratios: Radiant, Oval, Pear and Emerald Cut

The length to width ratio of a diamond is going to determine how long, or how wide it is going to look and have a great impact on the appearance of your finished #engagementring. For all shapes other than round brilliant, there are different ratios available within each shape. While determining which ratio you want for your center-stone is a matter of preference, there are also certain guideline recommendations based on each cut. One thing to note; the longer ones will always appear larger than the wider ones because your eye is drawn to the vertical direction on the finger. Keep watching to see ratio comparisons for the popular Radiant, Oval, Pear and Emerald Cut #diamonds
-
RADIANT CUT: here we are focusing on elongated #radiantcut diamonds and this visual gives a clear picture of what range to expect; all these diamonds weight around 1.75 carats. For those that want a fuller appearance on the finger a 1.25:1 to 1.30:1 ratio is where you want to be. If you really want the length then aim for something closer to 1.35:1 up to around 1.4:1. The diamond on the right measures 8.9mm long x 6.2mm wide; giving you the same length as a 2.5 carat diamond!
-
OVAL: for the #ovaldiamonds we prepared four examples spanning from 1.35:1 all the way to 1.50:1. Recently we are finding that clients are gravitating to the longer ovals like the three on the right because it gives you that extra coverage on the hand. As an added bonus, the more elongated the oval the less the bow-tie effect (undesirable dark spot across the center of stone) can be seen. Each diamond in this lineup is around 2 carats and the one all the way to the right is a 1.90 carat D color/SI1 with a very hard to find 10.4mm length in this carat size.
-
PEAR: for the pear shapes we prepared 2.5 carat diamonds with ratios starting at around 1.45:1 and going up to just over 1.6:1. The sweet-spot of late seems to be closer to the 1.6:1 look for the same reasons mentioned for ovals above; more coverage on the hand and less bow-tie effect. While more elongated is in we would not recommend getting near a 1.7:1 ratio as that will throw off the entire look of the pear shape and lose its tear-drop appearance.
-
EMERALD: the #emeraldcut is similar to the radiant in terms of their appearance/outline and in turn their ratios. Here we have 2.5 carat diamonds with ratios from 1.35:1 up to 1.45:1. For this shape clients are more conservatice and prefer the wider looking stones however there has been a spike in demand for the more elongated ones reaching that 1.45:1 and above ratio.Lauren B Jewelry: custom engagement rings, diamonds, moissanites and fine jewelry.
